Martha C. Day Scholarship Foundation, Inc. is named for a deceased legendary educator and civil rights advocate, Martha C. Day, of Brownsville/Liberty City in Miami. A retired teacher and a graduate of Bethune Cookman College, now Bethune Cookman University, Martha C. Day was an active member of numerous civic and religious organizations; in a few of them she was a charter member, in some she was a Member of the Board. Some of the organizations that were lucky to have had Martha C. Day as a proud member included AARP local chapter, American Association of University Women, St. John’s Community Development Corporation, Brownsville Homeowners Association, National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club of South Florida, Bethune-Cookman Alumni Association, to name just a few. Finally, she was the Founding Member of the Dade County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
She was honored many times by her peers in recognition of what she stood for and her personal commitment to mentoring and counselling youngsters. She never missed an opportunity to mentor the youngsters, with whom she crossed paths, on the merits of higher education and the need for them to attend church on Sundays. She often used her personal resources to help under-privileged children continue their education.
Martha C. Day was a strong and unrelenting advocate for education, especially for the Black community. Although she was not a registered lobbyist, she never missed an opportunity to pester politicians with her views on how to improve quality of life in her beloved Brownsville/Liberty City community.
She was a force of nature who believed in practicing what she preached. With that in mind, she directed the incorporation of Martha C. Day Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and created a mechanism for its funding – to provide college education assistance to needy students in her community. We hope the recipients of our awards will make her proud.
